Allergy Answers

Once again the pollen is flying and many are suffering from the common allergy symptoms of runny, itchy nose, eyes or throat, sneezing, sinus congestion, cough and possibly asthma symptoms.  Although these are strong symptoms, they are actually signs of a weakened immune system that is over-reacting to something harmless.  For some reason the immune system perceives the allergen as a threat and mounts a massive response to expel it from the body.  It is like a forced detoxification of the body which often occurs in spring, a natural time for detoxification.

For the answer to allergies then, let’s first look at what is weakening the immune system.  Several factors may be at play here.  Among them:

    1. Genetics-The tendency to allergies can be inherited, but the new field of epigenetics is showing us that nutritional and environmental improvements can overrule genetic tendencies.

    2. Pollution and toxicity- Many people notice that they become more sensitive after toxic exposure.  This is a sign that the body has not cleared the poisons from the cells and they are having a lingering effect on the immune system.

    3. GI imbalance-A huge source of inner toxicity is bad bacteria and organisms in the gut, while good bacteria here actually enhance the formation of a strong immune system.  Antibiotics play a big role in upsetting this balance.  Infants given probiotics for the first 6 months of life have markedly lower allergy and eczema rates.

    4. Stress-The interconnections between the mind and the immune system are countless.  The stress response or fight or flight response is an indication that the mind perceives a threat.  The allergic response is also one of a perceived threat to the body.

Antihistamines are typically used to block histamine and stifle the allergic response.  They work temporarily to suppress symptoms but in the long run are adding more chemicals for the body to detoxify and expel.

Natural antihistamines can be used to quell the allergic response in a gentler way. These include: vitamin C with bioflavenoids, especially quercitin; grapeseed extract; herbs like nettles and butterbur; homeopathic remedies such as histaminum, allium cepa or sabadilla.

To deal with the underlying cause of allergy, one needs to identify and address the source of the immune system weakness.

    1. A healthy diet and lifestyle are the foundation of good health.  Plenty of fresh, raw vegetables and fruits as well as healthy omega 3 fatty acids help to stabilize reactive immune cells.

    2. The liver and kidneys are the body’s chief organs of elimination.  Biotherapeutic drainage of the liver is especially helpful in correcting an overactive immune system.

    3. Balancing the digestive system with whole foods high in fiber and good quality probiotics is key for immune health.  Specially formulated infant probiotics for the first six months of life can impact the health of the child through his/her whole life.

    4. Learning to deal with stress and shifting out of the fight or flight response allows your body to rest and heal.  Often specific traumas are held in the body from the time of onset of allergy.  The Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT can collapse this trauma from the nervous system and has proven to be effective in the treatment of allergic symptoms.
