Preventing Flu: There’s so much more that you can do.

In this current pandemic of fear, it is frustrating to hear health officials repeat over and over that all we can do is wash our hands, stay at home and wait for the vaccine to be developed.  There is so much more that can be done.

In the swine flu outbreak of 1976, 40,000 vaccinations for the flu were administered.  In the end, one person died from the flu and 25 died from the vaccines.  We must be cautious in rapidly sending vaccines to market.  The best defence you have against the flu and all illness is a strong immune system.

While preventing exposure through hygiene and isolation are important, there are several things that have been proven to strengthen and support the immune system:

  1. A whole foods diet high in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains and quality proteins provides the raw materials for a strong healthy body.  Lab tests show that an influx of sugar reduces immune cell function.  100 grams of sugar resulted in a 50% reduction in the ability of white blood cells to engulf bacteria for up to 5 hours.

  2.  Exercise has several benefits.  It stimulates clearing of waste material from around cells and increases circulation of immune cells through the body.  It has stress-reducing effects helpful in these anxious times.

  3. Natural Vitamin D3 stimulates the body to produce at least 200 antimicrobial compounds.  In one study,* 2,000 units daily of vitamin D prevented flu in 100% of individuals.  It is not yet known why the Canadian tourists have had such mild cases of the swine flu but you can bet that their vitamin D levels were high after sunning themselves on the beaches of Mexico.

  4. Good bacteria or probiotics are an important part of the immune system.  They aid in the proper development of immune cells in the digestive tract.  Supplementing these bacteria is especially important after antibiotic use.

  5. Sleep and rest are necessary for your nervous system and immune systems to function properly.

  6. Coping well with stress is vital for immune health.  Stress hormones suppress immune function and most doctors find that 90-95% of illnesses start during or after a stressful time.  The Emotional Freedom Technique is a valuable tool to clear stressful thoughts from the mind and bring positive healing attitudes into play.

  7. Homeopathy has a lot to offer during times of illness.  Among the Unda drainage remedies, #15 makes the immune system more effective and #2 helps clear toxic residues from the body.  Together they are an excellent support for the immune system during fever and acute illness.  Classical homeopathic remedies have been used for hundreds of years to treat the flu.  In the flu epidemic of 1918 the mortality rate for homeopathic treatment was 1.05 percent and the rate for traditional medical treatment of the time was 30 percent.

  8. Herbal medicine provides many herbs that have antiviral and antibacterial action as well as immune strengthening properties.  Garlic works as a broad spectrum anti microbial.  Echinacea and astragalus are some of our best immune boosting herbal medicines.

So don’t despair.  Instead of relying on vaccines and drugs with their possible side effects, rely on your own powerful immune system.  If you take care of it, it will take care of you.
