Dr. Janice Potter Naturopathic Physician
What is Naturopathic Medicine?
This area of medicine is a very broad one incorporating natural therapies from around the world that people have used to heal the human body. Some are as ancient as traditional Chinese medicine, (over 4,000 years old) up to modern technical innovations such as chelation therapy.
From this wide range the individual naturopath chooses a combination of therapies that best suit his/her interests and skills. Dr. Potter has chosen four forms of treatment that address a wide variety of concerns.
Investigation
A key principle of naturopathic medicine is to find and treat the cause of the dis-ease. The naturopath works as a detective, gathering information from various sources to determine the cause of the problem. Dr. Potter uses an extensive initial interview and physical exam, as well as questionnaires and tests as needed to obtain information. A detailed look at the client’s history usually reveals the initial cause of health problems.
Foundation
For everyone, the foundation of good health is a nutritious diet and a healthy lifestyle. This is addressed with each client as well as methods to enhance elimination of toxins from the body.
However, many people do this to a large extent already and still have health concerns. Blockages to healing exist and these need to be removed. Dr. Potter has selected four main forms of treatment that address these obstacles, be they physical, chemical or emotional.
Removing Blockages to Healing
a) Physical Blockages are of two main types:
1) Toxins held in the body, especially those stored inside cells, which are very difficult to reach. These are addressed using Biotherapeutic Drainage.
2) Structural problems are often a result of tension stored in muscles and tendons leading to pain and reduced function. These are treated using the Bowen
Technique.
b) Unresolved Emotional Blockages affect the flow and balance of energy (or qi in Chinese Medicine). This can lead to a whole host of problems from low energy, anxiety and depression to chronic pain. These obstacles to healing can be removed by:
3) Classical Homeopathy
4) the Emotional Freedom Technique
